What is a governor?

College governors play a crucial role in the governance and strategic direction of further education (FE) institutions. Here are some of their key responsibilities:

Strategic Direction: They help set the strategic direction, vision, and ethos of the college, ensuring it aligns with the needs of students, employers, and the community
Accountability: Governors hold the senior leadership team accountable for the college’s performance, including educational outcomes, financial health, and overall effectiveness
Financial Oversight: They oversee the financial performance of the college, ensuring that funds are used effectively and efficiently
Curriculum and Quality: Governors contribute to shaping a relevant and responsive curriculum that meets the needs of local employers, and ensure the quality of teaching and learning and the student experience.
Legal and Regulatory Compliance: They ensure the college complies with legal requirements, including safeguarding, equality, diversity, and health and safety regulations

Governor?

We are always looking for enthusiastic and skilled volunteers to join us. Being a college governor is an unpaid role that offers significant personal and professional benefits, including the opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a positive impact on the local community.

You do not need to be an expert in education we welcome individuals who can bring diverse perspectives and expertise to the board. Training and induction is offered to help new governors understand their roles and responsibilities. You just need to be at least 18 years of age, have a strong commitment to improving education and life chances of young people, and some time to give. As well as attending Board and Committee meetings, governors are encouraged to get involved in college life, meet students and staff and to represent the college to local stakeholders.

Are you interested but not able to commit to a full governor role?

The four Surrey Colleges would still like to hear from you about ‘associate’ or ‘co-opted’ governor roles on our Boards and Committees. These roles provide an opportunity to contribute your specific skills and experience where they are most needed but with less of a time commitment than being a full governor.

About us

Each of the four colleges within the SurreyFE umbrella have their own governing board (also called the Corporation).
